Derrick May, one of the originators of the 1980’s Detroit techno scene, is facing a slew of sexual assault allegations. The accusations, sparked by none other than former friend and collaborator, Michael James, claim that May is has been responsible for “sexual misbehavior,” including but not limited to rape, for the majority of his DJing career. Read the statement in its entirety below.
Although Derrick May has yet to publicly address the allegations, a followup post by James purports that he is being sued by the DJ on the basis of defamation. The extent of the allegations, which if true include hundreds of women around the globe, may be impossible to prove, but it wasn’t long before the controversy surrounding the matter invoked testimonials from women who had first-hand experiences with May in the past.
Derrick May has since been removed as a guest speaker from 2020’s Paris Electronic Week.
