The family of Avicii —\u00a0AKA producer and DJ Tim Bergling — have released a new statement about the star’s death.<\/p>\n

“Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions.\u00a0An over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress,”<\/i>\u00a0they wrote in the statement issued today. “When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most \u2013 music.”<\/p>\n

“He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness.\u00a0He could not go on any longer.\u00a0He wanted to find peace.”<\/p>\n

Bergling\u00a0was found dead in his hotel room<\/a><\/strong> in Oman on Friday. He was 28.\u00a0While an official cause of death has not been revealed, today’s statement suggests that Bergling took his own life.<\/p>\n

Avicii began releasing music in 2008, and his career soared to\u00a0headliner level in 2011 with the success of his ubiquitous hit \u2018Levels\u2019. He hit mainstream superstardom\u00a0with the release of the single \u2018Wake Me Up\u2019 and album\u00a0True<\/em>\u00a0in 2013.<\/p>\n

Over the years he spoke\u00a0at length about his struggles with the mental and physical pressure\u00a0of DJing, telling\u00a0inthemix in 2013<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that his constant drinking and partying had landed him in hospital back in 2012.<\/p>\n

He officially\u00a0retired from touring<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in March 2016, after cancelling a string of shows in 2013 and 2014 due\u00a0health issues surrounding acute pancreatitis \u2014 in part brought on by excessive drinking. His struggle to keep up with his excessive touring schedule — which at one point hit nearly 320 shows per year<\/a><\/strong> — was captured in the 2017 documentary Avicii: True Stories<\/em>.<\/p>\n
