There are tons of artists with one very definite sound. If you tell a friend that one of them has a new song, he or she pretty much knows exactly what it sounds like before even getting a chance to listen to it. Alex Metric definitely is not one of those artists. By releasing material as heavy as “Rave Weapon” alongside offerings as funky as “Galaxy” and “Hope,” he has shown a rare and admirable versatility.
Next up is “Heart Weighs a Ton,” an infectious dance record reminiscent of his 2013 release “Safe With You,” easily one of the best songs of the year. Like “Safe With You,” “Heart Weighs a Ton” is progressive enough for the big room while still appealing to the indie crowd. The track’s versatility is due at least in part to Stefan Storm, whose vocals are as earnest as any we’ve heard in quite some time. But all the earnestness in the world can’t save a mediocre track. Luckily, Storm’s voice is paired with one of an amazing producer’s most dazzling instrumentals, and the final product is obviously stellar.
“Heart Weighs a Ton” is out now in the U.S. via Big Beat.
