Someone has already predicted the winner of the triple j Hottest 100

Category: EDM NEWS

Did you know that no act that has come in second on the Hottest 100 countdown has ever gone on to top the chart?

That only six Hottest 100 winning tracks have also topped the ARIA chart? Or that only four acts – Denis Leary, The Cranberries, Spiderbait and Augie March – have topped the countdown with only one of their tracks featuring in the top 100 songs of the year as chosen by triple j listeners?

These may all be fairly obscure facts and the sort of observations that make your Australia Day parties painfully boring, but there’s a blogger out there in the dark depths of the internet who lives for this sort of trivial information.

As pointed put by Pedestrian, Patrick Avenell has compiled these facts and more into an exhaustive blog post – The Ultimate Form Guide For The 2015 triple j Hottest 100 – and predicted that Major Lazer’s Lean On will top this year’s Hottest 100 ahead of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ truly horrid Downtown and Chet Faker and Marcus Marr’s collaboration The Trouble With Us.

So why is Patrick betting on Major Lazer’s Lean On to top the poll? There are nearly 4,000 words of predictions, observations and trivia in the post before it finally reaches its conclusion but it all comes down to two key points:

1) Lean On and Downtown are the only real Hottest 100 contenders to have hit #1 on the charts as Jarryd James’ Do You Remember, The Weeknd’s Can’t Feel My Face and Drakes’ Hotline Bling all peaked at #2.

2) Lean On is supported in its bid to top the Hottest 100 by other Major Lazer tracks like Powerful and Be Together, which could also find a place on the countdown and act as domestiques to help with the grunt work – unlike Downtown, which appears to be Macklemore’s only contender.

It’s not the most convincing argument, considering that the two most recent winners – Vance Joy’s Riptide and Chet Faker’s Talk Is Cheap both peaked at #6 on the ARIA chart, but it’s certainly food for thought as we enter the madness of the Hottest 100 season. [Article image via Barrakud Festival]
