Claude VonStroke drops new single and accompanying official video, ‘The Rain Break’

Dirtybird label boss Claude VonStroke is the ultimate purveyor of the imprint’s signature chunky basslines and funky rhythms. The new single and title track off of VonStroke’s The Rain Break EP — his first release of 2016 — is no exception.

Original vocal tracks are somewhat uncommon releases on Dirtybird, and “The Rain Break” is made even more unusual by using the artist’s own vocals for the track’s topline. As it happens, the track is a dual cover of Raze’s classic “Break For Love” and Oran Juice Jones’ “The Rain.” VonStroke explains the song’s origins: “I kept singing the ‘Break For Love’ bassline over and over again in my head but the vocal that always popped in over the top was from Oran Juice Jones. I can’t explain why that happened but I just thought they went together so well that I ran with it.”

The characteristically groovy bassline and irresistible hook belie the video’s dark narrative, directed by New York-based photographer Simon Cave. The video follows a jilted protagonist who goes to great lengths to exact revenge on a couple, involving a trip to the liquor store and gas masks.
