Category: Electronic music is everywhere these days, with festivals being held all over the globe, dominating the charts and selling millions of records, and appearing in cruise ship commercials. With little left to infiltrate, international intrigue can be added to the list of what is within the electronic scene’s grasp.
French legend Jean-Michel Jarre recently collaborated with Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who leaked thousands of classified documents in 2013. Snowden appears on “Exit” off of Jarre’s forthcoming album Electronica Volume II: The Heart of Noise.
When speaking with The Gaurdian, whose editors introduced Snowden and Jarre, the whistleblower revealed that he has “…always appreciated electronic music,” and went on to fondly cite the 8-bit sounds from early video games.
Snowden doesn’t lend any actual production on the track — Jarre travelled to Moscow, where Snowden is living under temporary asylum from US authorities, and sampled remarks Snowden made regarding electronic surveillance.
The track itself does have a quasi-retro vibe to it, bringing to mind dystopian ’80s movies. This is in line with Snowden’s contributions, which urge the listener to take the issues of electronic privacy seriously.
