After rushing the stage to Queen’s “We Are The Champions,” Killer Mike took a moment to solemnly address the crowd about Prince’s death. In his honor, he said, they’d be “burning this to the ground” and they didn’t disappoint.
During their stellar Coachella weekend 2 performance, rap mavericks Run The Jewels surprised the adoring crowd with a serious handful of special guests. Though there was no Bernie Sanders introduction or appearance from Nas, the duo made short work of the tradition.
First to appear in the lineup was DJ Shadow, who helped perform their collaboration “Don’t Speak.” In an amazing crossover, Travis Barker of Blink-182 fame joined the duo, playing drums for “All Due Respect.” Barker appears on the original and joined the duo on stage last year to perform as well.
Next, Outkast’s Big Boi appeared onstage to perform a verse from their song “Banana Clipper.” Big Boi was shortly joined by Phantogram where, together as Big Grams, they performed “Born to Shine.” The track, which features RTJ, was a pleasantly wavy interlude to the electric set.
Gangsta Boo also joined RTJ onstage to gift the swelling crowd with her verse on “Love Again (Akinyele Back)” and Gary Clark Jr made a cameo, playing guitar on “Crown.”
For their finale, Killer Mike and El-P brought out Rage Against The Machine’s Zack de la Rocha to help them perform fan favorite “Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck).”
