Adelaide nightspot Red Square has hit back at claims that bouncers turned away a group of punters because they were deaf.
In a Facebook post that went viral over the weekend, club-goer Ruby Tanny-Cornish alleged that bouncers at Red Square discriminated against a group of her friends, refusing them entry because they are deaf. Tanner-Cornish said she was celebrating a 21st birthday with friends on Friday night when bouncers at the club told her group they were “too stupid to be allowed in because they were deaf” and that Red Square is a “VIP venue that would not allow us in”.
“This was the most upsetting thing I have ever witnessed, and a father was unable to celebrate his daughters milestone 21st birthday with her and 10 friends were turned away from venues due to being deaf,” she wrote in the post, which has now been shared over 13,000 times. “No one should have to go through this, it’s just not acceptable.”
But Red Square have hit back at the claims, saying they refused two members of the group entry but only because they were intoxicated or not suitably dressed. “Accusations that some were refused entry because of a disability is both false and defamatory,” they said in a statement posted to Facebook. “Police officers were present during this time. Under Liquor Licensing Laws and Regulations it is an offence to serve alcohol to persons who are intoxicated and we enforce this and other regulations vigorously.”
“Red Square does not discriminate against persons entering our premises.”
Red Square say they have interviewed the security staff on duty when the alleged incident took place and that an internal investigation will be completed today on Monday June 6, when they will release CCTV footage from the night. See their full statement below.
