Maitreya Festival is officially back from the dead

Category: EDM NEWS

Just over a month after telling punters it “may never” come back, Maitreya has officially announced its return.

The festival will take place at a site near Byron Bay over the Labour Day weekend (March 10-13). It will be free to punters whose tickets to the 2016 event had not been refunded.  Maitreya organisers had previously said there were “less than 1800 people” who had not been refunded.

Organisers pulled the pin on Maitreya 2016 after failing to secure a permit to a site at Lake Wooroonook in rural Victoria. In May, organisers said they were “unable” to offer refunds to those who purchased tickets to the event, despite being legally obligated to. Maitreya’s ticketing company TryBooking later said they were suing organisers for the alleged $1 million worth of tickets that had been sold prior to the event.

To make good to disgruntled ticket-holders, organisers had previously planned a “grand final” weekend event, which was scheduled to take place in September. But those plans were scuppered by the local Buloke Council, who refused to issue a permit for any further events at Maitreya’s Lake Wooroonook site.
