Online dance hub Beatport has crunched the numbers on Australia’s listening habits to reveal which tracks and genres have been trending over the last 18 months — and the results might surprise you.
When it comes to our most popular genres, techno and its not-closely-related brother tech house have consistently battled for the top two spots in the Asia-Pacific region, with techno recently coming out on top. Deep house has kept its position steady at #3, while drum & bass and house have been swapping places at #4 and #5 for the last two years.
More interestingly, electro house plunged from the #4 position in 2015 to #10 in 2017, while genres like psytrance, progressive house, and electronica have been steadily increasing in popularity. Check out the full graphic below.
As for our favourite tracks? Prok & Fitch’s huge Green Velvet collab’ ‘Sheeple’ was the most bought track from Australasia over the last 18 months, while Sonny Fodera and Mat.Joe’s remix of Gershon Jackson’s ‘Take It Easy’ landed at #2. Elsewhere, there’s the Riva Starr edit of ‘Groovestylin’, the Vini Vici remix of ‘Hilight Tribe’, and tracks from Dennis Crux, Reinier Zonneveld and Enrico Sangiuliano.
In the global Australian artist rankings, house head Sonny Fodera and Melbourne favourite Will Sparks have taken out the top two places, with Timmy Trumpet, Flume and DJ duo NERVO rounding out the top five.
